From Brazil: What’s happening with Manchester City talks for wonderkid

Manchester City’s move for Palmeiras striker Heittor Vinicius has moved beyond a simple bid-and-response situation and into something a bit messier behind the scenes.

The Premier League champions have already seen an offer knocked back. Talks are still ongoing. But now there is also what Brazilian reports describe as a “battle of narratives” shaping how this deal is being presented from both sides.

That usually means one thing – the negotiation is very much alive.

Brazilian press claims on Heittor situation

As we already covered, Manchester City have made an offer worth around £17.4m (€20m) for Heittor Vinicius.

Palmeiras acknowledge that bid exists, but contrary to what we covered from Spanish outlet AS, they did not rejected it. ESPN Brazil says they just are not rushing into anything.

They do not need to. The Brazilian side own 100% of the player’s rights and have a €100m (£87m) release clause in place. That gives them full control over the timing and the price.

At the same time, sources close to the City Football Group have taken a more relaxed tone publicly. Probably because a spell in Girona is his first planned destination. But the message is that Heittor is being tracked closely, without confirming how far talks have actually progressed.

Put those two angles together and you get the current picture. Palmeiras pushing value up. City keeping things quieter while working in the background.

Not just a one-club race anymore

Heittor Vinicius is attracting attention from elsewhere too. Shakhtar Donetsk have already shown willingness to make a move, and there have been other enquiries from Europe. Nothing concrete beyond that yet, but enough to show City are not alone.

West Ham United are also still part of the wider context after earlier monitoring, even if they have not made a formal step.

That extra interest gives Palmeiras more leverage and increases the pressure on City to decide how far they want to go.

Form backing up the hype

Heittor Vinicius has earned the attention with his performances this year. He had a tough start to 2026 after suffering a knee injury early on, which ruled him out of the Brazilian Youth Cup. Since coming back, though, he has been sharp.

Across Palmeiras U20 and Brazil’s U20 side, he has eight goals and one assist in 11 matches. That return, especially after injury, has only strengthened the feeling inside the club that he has a high ceiling.

There is also a growing expectation he could get first-team minutes later this season. If that happens, his price is unlikely to stay where it is now.

Next steps for CFG

Manchester City are still in a strong position, but this is no longer straightforward. The first bid has already been rejected. Palmeiras are holding firm. Other clubs are circling.

At the same time, talks are ongoing and there is still a sense the deal can be done.

For now, it looks like a waiting game – with both sides trying to shape the outcome as much as the numbers themselves.
