April 23 – Chelsea have dismissed Liam Rosenior after just 106 days in charge, bringing a swift end to a contract that had been due to run until 2032.

The decision follows a run of five straight defeats without scoring, capped by a 3-0 loss to Brighton on Tuesday. That result proved to be the final nail Rosenior’s coffin, not least given the backdrop – Chelsea’s well-documented links to Brighton since BlueCo’s takeover, having recruited a growing number of the club’s players, staff and coaches from the south coast club. Only to be beaten 3-0 by what’s left.

Rosenior’s exit is expected to come at a significant cost, with reports placing the payout in the region of £24m. More broadly, it adds to a growing pattern under BlueCo, who have now moved through five managers in under four years since completing their £4.25bn takeover from Roman Abramovich in 2022 – and coughed up over £50m in payouts to move managers on.

At the point of sale, Chelsea had just finished third in the Premier League under Thomas Tuchel and were the Champions League holders. Fast forward and they now face a battle to secure European football, with the financial implications that carries.

Dressing room dynamics were key to the wheels falling off for Rosenior. High profile tensions involving record signing Enzo Fernández were understood to be part of a wider issue, sparking questions internally over whether Rosenior – still early in his managerial career – had the authority to manage a squad built at such a significant, superstar-level cost.

Rosenior’s final act was a pointed public criticism of his players following the Brighton defeat, a result that left Chelsea without a league goal in five games for the first time in over a century.

In a brief statement, Chelsea said: “We will undertake a process of self-reflection,” a line that will resonate with a fanbase that has already voiced frustration both inside and outside the ground as tempers boiled over in recent weeks.

Calum McFarlane will return as caretaker head coach for the remainder of the season, with a search for a permanent appointment under way. Attention now turns quickly to the FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United this weekend, with the club’s short-term trajectory still very much in play.
