Gary Neville shares why he thought Liam Rosenior wasn't right for Chelsea from day one

Liam Rosenior was always a bit of a strange appointment. While impressive at Strasbourg, the step up to Chelsea felt like a big leap and Gary Neville claims he thought it was wrong from day one.

Rosenior was confirmed as being sacked on Wednesday evening, less than 24 hours after the hammering Chelsea received at Brighton. The first time Chelsea have lost five league games in a row since 1993.

All the stats linked to Rosenior’s time in charge are damning. Now, after just 23 matches in charge, the club have decided to part ways with Rosenior and have installed Calum McFarlane on a caretaker basis.

Pros and cons of hiring Andoni Iraola?

Plenty of names are already being linked with a move to Chelsea this summer. The likes of Andoni Iraola, Cesc Fabregas, Edin Terzic and others have been named. Gary Neville claims he never fancied Rosenior.

Many were impressed with how Rosenior started as Chelsea manager. Six wins from his first seven in charge and the only defeat was a battling 3-2 loss to Arsenal at Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup.

But it unravelled from there. Neville told Sky Sports’ Stick To Football that he was unsure about the appointment of Rosenior from the first day, questioning his credentials for the Chelsea job.

Indeed, he says Rosenior should never have been appointed Chelsea manager: “I want to take Liam out of it a bit because I genuinely don’t believe an inexperienced manager should have been put in that role.

“One thing I said at the time, if young players don’t need young players alongside them, they need experienced players, young players definitely don’t need a young manager,” Neville said on Rosenior.

Who is to blame – Rosenior, the players or the owners?

Ultimately, the buck always stops with the manager, and Rosenior has not been able to convince a changing room that boasts plenty of big egos. So, Rosenior deserves his part in the blame for his sacking.

Gary Neville says the Chelsea owners are CLUELESS! Do you agree? 🤔

But as Neville says, Rosenior should never have been given the job in the first place. Chelsea is a huge football club, on the world scale, and it deserves an experienced manager who commands respect.

Rosenior had never managed a Premier League game before arriving at Cobham. But some blame should also be attributed to the players. Plenty of reports have come out about nicknames for him and more.

That is despicable. Regardless of who the manager is, the players should brush their egos aside and do what Rosenior had told them to do. The loss at Brighton proved they were not playing for their manager.
