Newcastle United identify £35m Dan Burn successor - Chelsea also interested

German media claim Newcastle United are keeping tabs on Werder Bremen centre-back Karim Coulibaly.

Newcastle United continue to be linked with a move for Werder Bremen sensation Karim Coulibaly.

The 18-year-old has enjoyed a stellar breakout campaign at Werder Bremen. A physically imposing, quick centre-back, Coulibaly can also operate as a defensive midfielder.

He made his Bremen debut in August and has been a mainstay ever since. Coulibaly has become a rare highlight in an otherwise dismal campaign, with Die Werderaner battling relegation.

Newcastle United and Chelsea interested

Reports on the continent claim Newcastle are interested in a potential summer swoop. There is a growing German contingent at St James’ Park after Nick Woltemade and Maick Thiaw arrived last year.

Bild claim the Magpies and Chelsea are keeping tabs on Coulibaly’s situation. At present, it is noted that Bremen have slapped a £35million price tag on his head.

That is a steep price for a player who has made just 24 appearances in senior football. Newcastle also must balance a delicate financial situation in the summer, with little funds to spend until outgoings occur.

Bremen’s hardball stance could soften if they are relegated. As it stands, Daniel Thioune’s men sit five points above the drop zone with four games remaining.

Newcastle United defender situation

Newcastle will be looking to bolster their defensive options this summer. However, full-back is the current priority due to Kieran Trippier, Matt Targett and Emil Krafth all being expected to leave.

A major rebuild on Tyneside could see Toon chiefs turn to the heart of defence. Sven Botman penned a new contract in January to commit his future alongside Thiaw.

Beyond that, Newcastle's options are slim. Dan Burn turns 34 next month and Fabian Schar will likely leave when his contract expires at the end of the season.

For now, other areas - namely goalkeeper and striker - are of top importance to the Magpies. But do not rule out the possibility of a younger centre-back like Coulibaly joining to freshen up the backline.
