Suter, who was just three months shy of his 51st birthday, was called out of a seven-year retirement due to an injury to the regular Halifax Town goalkeeper, Howard Matthews, who was 43 years old at the time. This appearance made Suter the second oldest player to feature in the Football League.

In 1988, Luton Town achieved a remarkable victory in the Littlewoods (League) Cup, defeating the strong favourites and cup holders Arsenal at Wembley Stadium.
