Liverpool and Chelsea have entered the race for Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford, according to reports.

The England international is expected to leave the Etihad after just one season. He is seeking regular first-team action, having had to settle for being Gianluigi Donnarumma’s understudy.

The likes of Aston Villa, Tottenham and Newcastle had been credited with an interest in Trafford over the past weeks.

However, Goal claim that Arne Slot’s side and Chelsea are also in the mix for the shot-stopper.

Man City will sanction his departure

It is believed that Pep Guardiola’s side won’t stand in Trafford’s way if he wants to leave, despite paying Burnley £31m for his services back in July.

Reports suggest that the Cityzens have slapped an asking price of around £35m to £40m on the 23-year-old as they seek to make a small profit. It is unlikely to put off suitors from making an approach.

Considering the Reds already have three first-team keepers on their books – Alisson Becker, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Freddie Woodman – there isn’t really room for a new addition at the moment.

However, there are doubts over whether Alisson will stay at Anfield beyond the summer. His contract was extended for another year, but some believe that was simply done to protect his value and prevent him from leaving on a free transfer.

There are claims in Italy that the Brazilian has given his approval to joining Juventus at the end of the season. If there is any truth to those rumours, it would explain the interest in Trafford.

Of course, it could also be the case that neither story is true, but it is definitely a situation to keep an eye on over the coming months.
