Report: Sandro Tonali's new preferred summer move named after Liverpool and Man City interest

Liverpool could be looking to add central reinforcements to their squad during the 2026 summer transfer window.

Three midfielders could leave Anfield this year, with Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister and Wataru Endo all mooted for possible exits this week.

In turn, potential interest in Sandro Tonali ahead of the summer did make sense. However, it now looks as though the Italian is keen to secure a return to his home country once the window opens up in June.

With Arne Slot expected to stay, will Liverpool challenge for the Premier League next season?

Or will it be another difficult campaign? 😬

Sandro Tonali aiming to leave Newcastle United for Italy

At the beginning of April, Liverpool and Manchester City were linked with a move for the defensive midfielder.

It was said then that rival teams thought the Sky Blues were Tonali’s most likely destination in the summer.

However, TeamTalk are now reporting a return to the Serie A could be the most likely outcome.

A move to Italy is claimed to be the player’s priority, with Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan all touted as options, the latter of which being named as a potential frontrunner.

With Tonali seeming keen to secure a move outside of England, the report adds that Man City have already started to look at other options.

As for Liverpool, they are thought to have other plans in the transfer market this summer.

Liverpool’s midfield transfer targets

A report this week has said Liverpool are looking at three midfielders going into the next transfer window.

Crystal Palace and England star Adam Wharton is thought to be top of the Reds’ shortlist.

Wharton could be sold for £80m, and he is said to be a ‘dream midfield acquisition’.

But should a move for the Palace ace not come off, AZ Alkmaar’s Kees Smit and Tottenham Hotspur’s Archie Gray are also believed to have some interest from Liverpool.

Gray has been compared to Steven Gerrard and can play in a variety of positions, including right-back.
