‘In the next days’ – David Ornstein drops next Chelsea manager news

The biggest story surrounding Chelsea right now is their next manager. Of course, the season is not over yet. But most eyes are already on the future. The Blues still have the FA Cup to play for but considering how poor they have been in recent months, it is hard to expect them to win the competition, especially with Manchester City still in the mix. Calum McFarlane is in interim charge of the team until the end of the season.

Who will be the next permanent Chelsea manager? That could end up deciding the future of this entire BlueCo project. Recent whispers have suggested that there is a recognition behind the scenes that mistakes have been made and a willingness to rectify them.

The term ‘tweak’ has been thrown around consistently. Fans would have been happier with something like ‘revamp’ or ‘rebuild’.

Anyways, where is this Chelsea managerial search headed from here? We have an update on the situation. David Ornstein said on NBC Sports (via CFCDaily):

In the next days I would expect conversations between Chelsea & representatives of candidates & then in the weeks ahead they’ll be asking clubs for permission to potentially speak to them and that process will accelerate towards the end of the season and I do expect an appointment early in the summer.

Ornstein comment clears up one misconception about Chelsea’s manager search

Ornstein’s update does clear up one misconception. Chelsea are not just looking at managers who are available as free agents. They are also looking at those who are currently coaching at other clubs.

That does open up a lot more possibilities. Although it won’t make it any easier for them to convince managers that Chelsea is the place to be, after what the footballing world has witnessed in the four seasons since the BlueCo takeover.

Obviously, some quality managers are available as free agents as well, like Xabi Alonso and Xavi. But then, names like Cesc Fabregas are currently coaching elsewhere.

The sporting directors look set to be the ones leading the process. Of course, that is not something that will fill the fans with confidence.

🚨The sporting directors will lead this process. — “It’s a huge moment for Chelsea Football Club, they are not rushing and taking time because they have to get it right.” [@David_Ornstein on NBC]

What kind of manager do Chelsea fans want?

It is no secret that Chelsea fans want to see a proven, winning manager brought in. That was what brought success to the club in the past. Jose Mourinho. Antonio Conte. Carlo Ancelotti. Thomas Tuchel. All of them had enjoyed success elsewhere before joining the Blues.

That needs to be the target once again. Not another project manager that is most likely not going to take things forward. BlueCo cannot afford another bad appointment.

Firstly, because they have lost the trust of the majority of the fanbase already. Secondly, because the financial condition of the club is not ideal, and they need to start being successful again as soon as possible in order to bring in prize money as well as sponsors.
