Arsenal have opened discussions with Sporting CP left-back Maxi Araujo over a potential summer transfer, following his impressive performances against the Gunners in the Champions League quarter-finals.

[According to Portuguese newspaper Record](https://metro.co.uk/2026/04/25/arsenal-begin-talks-sign-manchester-united-target-69m-clause-28110145/), Arsenal have begun preliminary talks with the 26-year-old defender, who joined Sporting from Mexican side Toluca for €13.5 million in 2024.

Competition from Manchester rivals

----------------------------------

Arsenal face significant competition for Araujo’s signature, with both Manchester City and Manchester United reportedly interested in the left-back. Atletico Madrid are also monitoring his situation ahead of the summer window.

Sporting remain in a strong negotiating position, as Araujo has three years remaining on his contract which includes an €80 million release clause. The Portuguese champions are willing to listen to offers but will only consider bids exceeding €50 million.

Araujo’s Arsenal assessment

---------------------------

Speaking before Sporting’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League, Araujo expressed his respect for the Gunners’ quality. “I believe that all the Arsenal players are very good,” he said when asked about facing Bukayo Saka and other Arsenal wingers.

“Both are among the best wingers in the world, and for me it’s a privilege to face either of them. I feel prepared, and whoever plays, it won’t affect me. The most important thing is that I’m ready.”

International duties ahead

--------------------------

The defender is expected to feature prominently for Uruguay at the upcoming World Cup, where they have been drawn in Group H alongside Spain, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia.

Arsenal’s interest in Araujo reflects their ongoing search for defensive reinforcements, particularly in the left-back position. The 26-year-old’s performances in European competition have clearly impressed Arteta, who witnessed first-hand his defensive capabilities and attacking threat during the Champions League encounters.

With Sporting’s substantial valuation and competing interest from Premier League rivals, any potential deal would represent a significant investment for Arsenal as they look to strengthen their squad for the challenges ahead.
