'Whatever' - Arsenal captain says what no one is thinking about Newcastle United hours ahead of …

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has previewed tonight’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners haven’t lost to the Magpies at the Emirates in the Premier League since 2010 but were beaten 2-0 by Eddie Howe’s side in the Carabao Cup semi-final last season.

Arsenal have been top of the Premier League for the majority of the season but let their lead slip following a defeat at Manchester City last weekend. City’s win against Burnley in their game in hand put them top on goals scored with five games left to play.

But with City in FA Cup semi-final action against Southampton at 5:15pm, Arsenal know they will regain top spot with a result against an out-of-form Newcastle side.

The Magpies have lost eight of their last 11 in the Premier League and travel to the Emirates on the back of four successive defeats in all competitions.

Martin Odegaard believes NUFC can ‘beat anyone’ despite poor run

Arsenal are strong favourites to win this evening yet captain Martin Odegaard is notably wary of Howe’s side despite their recent form.

In his pre-match programme notes, the Norway international wrote: “We will be giving everything for the remaining six weeks.

“That’s the situation you want to be in at the end of the season and we are there. We now just make sure we make the most out of every single day and every single game.

“Now all the focus is on playing Newcastle today. Whatever their form has been like, we know that they’re a tough team to play and on their day they can beat anyone.

“They’ve shown that in a lot of games. It’s true that they’re not where they want to be in the table, but it’s still a team full of quality, and it’s always a physical and tough battle against them.

“It’s another tough game and we have to be ready for that and up for it, but we love to play at home and we’ve got to use that to our advantage.”

While Arsenal could go top with a win or a draw, Newcastle head into the game sitting 14th in the table and looking over their shoulder slightly rather than looking up.
