"We looked good" - Eddie Howe names positives from Arsenal - despite ninth defeat in 12

Newcastle United had a tough game at the Emirates on Saturday, but despite all the negativity and all the changes to the starting lineup, things weren't all that bad.

If you can look at this game in isolation rather than the fourth Premier League defeat on the trot that it is, there's plenty to be optimistic about tonight.

That being said, back in the full context, fans still have every right to be nervous and angry.

However you're feeling after that game, though, you can't deny that it was a much-improved performance from the Magpies compared to the last three games. Which probably surprised everyone after seeing the team Eddie Howe had put out.

There were no world-beating performances, but nobody was particularly poor either, for most of the game, anyway. Once again, though, it was a case of not producing enough when going forward. Thankfully, our defence was fairly solid. After ignoring the warning signs from Arsenal's early corners, that is.

Eddie Howe was pleased with his defence

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Eddie Howe was full of praise for his back line, while admitting that it was still a frustrating day for his side yet again.

"It was our best defensive performance for a long time. We looked solid, we looked good.

"There were some good bits with the ball as well in both halves. We didn't create enough and when we did, we didn't take them and they took theirs from distance form a corner.

"It's another frustrating defeat for us but a better performance.

"We had defensive resilience, a lot of blocked shots, we didn't have the look of a team that were going to concede whereas in recent weeks, we have.

"There were some good individual performances, the team structure was good so it was better in that aspect. Off the ball, our best performance in a while.

"But we've got to try and put it together. Losing games isn't good enough."

There's hope for the last four games

It was another defeat, but I'm not mad about it. Mostly because I thought we were going to get obliterated, especially when that teamsheet came out.

If we can play with this much heart in the last four games, we may even pick up a point or two before the season ends.

Although I do hope he puts Aaron Ramsdale back in goal next time out because Nick Pope absolutely terrifies me.
