Sunday’s briefing: Man City reach fourth straight FA Cup final and York go up

Manchester City booked their place in a fourth consecutive FA Cup final but made hard work of seeing off Championship side Southampton after falling behind in the 79th minute before rallying for a 2-1 win.

While that was happening, Arsenal edged out Newcastle 1-0 to knock City off top spot in the Premier League, while there was drama at the bottom as Spurs finally won their first Premier League game of 2026 but remained stuck in the bottom three as West Ham beat Everton in stoppage time.

The Women’s Super League title race took a surprise turn as leaders Manchester City lost to Brighton, while the much-hyped National League decider between Rochdale and York served up an ending nobody saw coming.

Manchester City’s treble hopes remain alive but only after a major scare as they needed a superb 87th-minute goal from Nico Gonzalez to beat Southampton after falling behind at Wembley.

Finn Azaz stunned Pep Guardiola’s men as Southampton scored on the break in the 79th minute, but Jeremy Doku quickly levelled before Gonzalez’s piledriver broke Saints hearts and set up a final against either Leeds or Chelsea.

With the Carabao Cup in the bag, City can still do a domestic treble although they have plenty of work ahead of them. While they were winning at Wembley, across town Arsenal were edging out Newcastle 1-0 thanks to fine ninth-minute goal from Eberechi Eze.

That put them back on top of the table, three points clear having played a game more, and they can put more pressure on given they will play in the league again – at home to Fulham – before City’s next match away to Everton on May 4.

Dramatic twists in relegation battle

It was all going on at the other end of the table as the relegation battle changed shape several times in the course of the afternoon.

The ‘as it stands’ table was all over the place as Tottenham went from being four points adrift of safety to 17th place to being two points behind West Ham in the space of 10 minutes.

West Ham struck first as they went ahead at home to Everton to leave Tottenham deep in trouble.

But Joao Palhinha’s 82nd-minute winner for Spurs closed the gap to two points, then had Spurs out of the bottom three when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall levelled for Everton in the 88th minute, only for Callum Wilson to win it for the Hammers in stoppage time.

York break Rochdale hearts in dramatic ending

The National League title decider between Rochdale and York served up a finish that not even a week’s worth of build-up could have foreseen as the match took a number of dramatic twists in stoppage time at Spotland.

Needing to win to overhaul York and claim the title, Rochdale took the lead through their top scorer Emmanuel Dieseruvwe five minutes into time added on, sparking wild scenes as fans invaded the pitch.

Six minutes had originally been added on, but when play eventually did resume York poured forward and Josh Stones fired home amid a goalmouth scramble in the 13th minute of added time to end York’s decade in non-league football. Rochdale must regroup in time for the play-offs.

City’s WSL charge falters at Brighton

Manchester City’s title charge in the Women’s Super League hit an unexpected speed bump as Madison Haley struck twice in a 3-2 Brighton win over the leaders at Broadfield Stadium.

City had been rewarded for a strong start when Kerolin fired them into the lead, but Haley levelled for Brighton against the run of play in first-half stoppage time.

Kiko Seike then put Brighton in front and City were rocked when Haley struck again. Khadija Shaw pulled one back but City could not avoid their third league defeat of the season which leaves them still needing five points from their final two games given Arsenal have three games in hand.

What’s on today?

Chelsea and Leeds will meet at Wembley in the second FA Cup semi-final to determine who will face Manchester City later this month.

Wrexham will be hoping Coventry have a hangover from their title celebrations as they look to continue their own Championship play-off push.

A day after Celtic moved level at the top of the Scottish Premiership, title hopefuls Hearts face an Edinburgh derby away to Hibs while Rangers are at home to Motherwell.
