OK, so it was an improved performance from the Magpies but there’s no getting away from the fact that they are in dismal form. Four defeats on the spin in the Premier League, and nine in their last 12, have seen Eddie Howe’s side plummet to 14th in the table.
Regrouping after the March international break, European qualification was still very much the aim. Now the dreaded R-word is being mentioned.
And it’s with good reason, too. As Newcastle sleepwalk into trouble, the teams below them are showing fight, with both Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United earning late wins before Howe’s men kicked off in North London.
United now find themselves just eight points above the drop zone with four matches left to play. It’s unlikely they’ll be dragged into it but with concerns over where the next result will come, it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
