'Not yet' - Bruno Guimaraes issues bittersweet 76-word statement moments after Newcastle United …

Bruno Guimaraes returned to Newcastle United’s starting line-up only to taste another defeat at Arsenal on Sunday evening.

Bruno Guimaraes couldn’t return to the Newcastle United side with a bang at Arsenal on Saturday evening.

The Magpies fell to a 1-0 defeat following Arsenal’s early goal scored by Eberechi Eze. Prior to that, Guimaraes saw an edge of the box strike sail over the bar.

Despite a close-fought game, Newcastle ultimately fell to a ninth defeat in 12 Premier League matches, the majority have come in Guimaraes’ absence due to a hamstring injury.

The Brazilian missed over two months of action following a hamstring injury picked up in a 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur back in February. And on his return to North London, this time on the red side, Guimaraes was back in the starting line-up but unable to lead the side to victory.

Guimaraes took to Instagram after the match to issue a short and honest statement.

It read: “Happy to be starting a match again after a long time out. I’m not yet at my best physical level, but we’ll get there. I think today the desire to win was there, and I believe we deserved more.

“We know we haven’t been good enough this season, and that’s something that really frustrates us and something we should have improved a long time ago. Four games left for us to finish as best as possible.”

The midfielder was withdrawn in the closing stages of the match after slipping awkwardly and looking uncomfortable in the aftermath.

Reflecting after the match, Guimaraes provided some insight into his injury frustrations and withdrawal at the Emirates Stadium.

“I was very tired in the second half,” the Newcastle captain explained.

"It [the hamstring injury in February] was my worst injury. I was feeling like someone in my family [had passed away].

"It was a sad moment for me. A tough moment. A very important moment of the season. It was very weird for me to miss so many games.

"Now I am back and have to find my best level."

Newcastle have four games left to play but are in real danger of having their season peter out, or worse, be dragged lower in the table as the sides below them close the gap.
