Arsenal eyeing move to sign 'strongest defensive midfielder in the world' for Arteta - report

Arsenal are among the Premier League clubs tracking Atalanta midfielder Ederson ahead of the summer, GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs has revealed.

The north London side are aware of the Brazilian’s availability after this season, when his contract will enter the final 12 months.

Ederson is believed to have already reached an agreement over personal terms with Atletico Madrid, but the Spanish side are not prepared to meet Atalanta’s demands of around €45m-€50m (£39m-£43m).

Manchester United are another club keeping close tabs on the defensive midfielder, who has been with Atalanta since the summer of 2022, when he joined from Salernitana.

Jacobs, writing on X, revealed that Ederson, praised as 'the strongest defensive midfielder in the world', has opened the door to a summer switch to the Premier League amid interest from both Arsenal and Manchester United.

Arsenal looked into signing a new midfielder in January following a serious injury to Mikel Merino, who has not featured since.

The Gunners were linked with a shock late move for Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali, who could be on the move this summer.

Mikel Arteta’s side welcomed holding midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard last summer, but the latter has rarely been used this season, making just six Premier League appearances off the bench.

Zubimendi, meanwhile, has been a key player in Arsenal’s title charge, starting 33 of 34 games and registering six goal contributions.

Nicolo Tresoldi

After spending over £250m on new signings last summer, Arsenal appear to be heading for another busy off-season.

The Gunners could look to bring in fresh faces up front, with Club Brugge rising star Nicolo Tresoldi reportedly on the shortlist.

Tresoldi’s promising season in Belgium has attracted interest from several top clubs across Europe, with the Germany U21 international scoring 18 goals in 52 appearances.

According to reports in Italy, Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is already in contact with Brugge’s management over a potential summer deal for the 21-year-old.
