Arsenal U21s saw their season come to an end last night as they were beaten by their Manchester City counterparts in the Premier League 2 playoffs.

It has been a particularly challenging campaign for the young Gunners, who finished in 13th place in Premier League 2 and were eliminated in the group stages of the EFL Trophy.

There have been concerns regarding the coaching staff throughout the campaign and there will surely need to be changes in that regard in the summer as well as the usual overhaul of players.

At one stage early in the new year it appeared that matters were heading in the right direction with four wins in five games which included impressive victories away to Leeds United and Reading.

However, there were some disappointing results for Max Porter’s during the campaign including the 7-0 loss to Liverpool (albeit with a side missing many key players) and a 5-1 defeat at home to Leicester.

The core U21 squad was very small for much of the season, with most of those who were involved still eligible to feature for the U18s.

Marli Salmon, who often captained the side at the age of 16, continued to develop very well and achieved first-team recognition, as did Andre Harriman-Annous, Ife Ibrahim and Brando Bailey-Joseph.

Ibrahim made the most appearances for the U21s this season, with Harriman-Annous finishing as the team’s top scorer.

Brayden Clarke featured prominently for the U21s and often showed commitment even in difficult circumstances, while Marcell Washington was also prominently involved.

Midfielders Theo Julienne and Demiane Agustien also made good progress.

Winger Charles Sagoe Jr often impressed before his mid-season loan to Kalmar.

A total of 44 players featured for Arsenal U21s this season including schoolboys Mishel Nduka, Emerson Nwaneri, Kyran Thompson and Angelinou Pedro.
