April 27 – Arsenal have released a new short film by the acclaimed Oscar-winning director, Spike Lee, in the club’s first collaboration with the Academy Award winner. It’s called ‘Who Are Ya?’, and it’s the centrepiece of Arsenal’s activation with global fintech partner Airwallex.
The setting is a pub and the setup is familiar.
But instead of arguing about the back four or whether the manager has lost the dressing room, the punters are debating financial issues like cross-border payments and FX rates. This is the stuff modern supporters apparently now discuss between pints, though whether Arsenal fans will actually be drowning their sorrows or toasting their title push by season’s end is, as ever, the open question.
The cast mixes current players, former legends, cultural figures, actors, and real supporters. Lee’s signature touches are all there, including the double dolly shot, which gives the film a cinematic edge most club content can only dream of.
Speaking via Arsenal’s official website, Lee said: “Fans today don’t just follow the game, they understand everything around it too… this film is about that voice, that culture, and that community.”
Matt Jennings, Global Creative Director at Airwallex, added: “We didn’t want to be a random logo… we decided to introduce our Arsenal partnership in a way supporters couldn’t ignore.”
Sponsorship in football used to mean a logo on a shirt and a panel at the pre-match press conference. Now it’s Spike Lee, a pub, and a forex conversation that somehow holds your attention for three minutes.
