Olympique Marseille head coach Habib Beye has issued a pointed message to Arsenal loanee Ethan Nwaneri, questioning the teenager’s commitment in training after leaving him out of the starting line-up against OGC Nice.
The 19-year-old was named on the bench despite Marseille dealing with a number of attacking absences, including Hamed Traore, Igor Paixao and Amine Gouiri.
Nwaneri’s omission raised eyebrows given the club’s injury situation, but Beye made it clear the decision was based purely on merit.
Speaking ahead of the match, the Marseille boss did not shy away from explaining his reasoning.
He acknowledged Nwaneri’s talent but stressed that performances in training had not met the required standard.
“He is a quality player, but he has to give us way more in his day-to-day commitment,” Beye said. “Other players gave way more.”
The comments underline a challenging period in France for the young Arsenal midfielder, who is currently on loan as part of his development.
Expectations were high when he made the move to Ligue 1, but his progress has been inconsistent under Beye’s management.
The decision to overlook him, even in an injury-hit squad, signals a clear message from the coaching staff about standards and accountability.
Marseille have been forced to reshuffle their attacking options in recent weeks, yet Nwaneri has not been able to establish himself as a regular starter.
Instead, Beye has opted to reward players who have shown greater intensity and application during training sessions.
While the door has not been closed entirely, the Arsenal youngster may now find himself limited to a reduced role for the remainder of the campaign.
Beye suggested Nwaneri could still feature against Nice, but his involvement is expected to come from the bench.
For Arsenal, the situation will be monitored closely as they assess the midfielder’s development away from the club.
Regular minutes were a key objective of the loan move, but competition and expectations at Marseille have proven demanding.
The feedback from Beye offers a clear insight into the areas Nwaneri must improve if he is to fulfil his potential at senior level.
With the season entering a decisive phase, Marseille’s priorities remain immediate results, leaving little room for inconsistency.
Nwaneri, meanwhile, faces a crucial period in his development as he looks to respond to the challenge and force his way back into contention.
