Arsenal Women secured a crucial 2-1 victory over OL Lyonnes in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final, overturning a first-half deficit with two second-half goals to take control of the tie.

The defending European champions found themselves trailing after 19 minutes when Jule Brand capitalised on a poor Arsenal pass. Svava intercepted Caitlin Foord’s ball and fed Yohannes, who found Brand in space. The German midfielder drove through the middle, beat Kim Little, and fired past Daphne van Domselaar despite the goalkeeper getting a touch.

Arsenal struggled in the opening period, playing with too much desperation against a Lyon side that looked comfortable controlling the tempo. The visitors had chances to extend their lead, with Kadidiatou Diani causing problems down the flanks.

Second-half transformation

--------------------------

Renee Slegers’ side emerged a different team after the break, pressing higher and forcing Lyon into mistakes. The equaliser came on 58 minutes through an unlikely source – a goalkeeping error from Christiane Endler.

Katie McCabe won a free kick on the left, and Mariona Caldentey’s low delivery was aimed at Stina Blackstenius. The Swedish striker never touched the ball but her movement distracted Endler, who fumbled the simple save and watched the ball trickle over the line.

Arsenal continued to pile on the pressure, with Olivia Smith particularly impressive on the right wing. The young forward’s pace and direct running caused constant problems for Lyon’s defence.

The winning goal arrived on 83 minutes, again from a Lyon defensive mistake. A miscommunication between defender Engen and goalkeeper Endler allowed Smith to pounce on the loose ball and roll it into an empty net.

Tactical masterclass

--------------------

The transformation was remarkable, with Arsenal’s pressing game forcing Lyon into uncharacteristic errors. Lotte Wubben-Moy was outstanding at the heart of defence, stepping into midfield to break up play and showing composure throughout.

Lyon had their chances to restore parity, with Diani hitting the crossbar after good work from substitute Marie-Antoinette Katoto. However, Arsenal’s defensive discipline held firm in the closing stages.

The result puts Arsenal in pole position ahead of the second leg in Lyon. The north London side demonstrated their championship mentality, recovering from a poor first half to dominate proceedings and create a platform for reaching back-to-back Champions League finals.

Arsenal will travel to France knowing they need to avoid defeat to secure their place in the final, with their superior away goals advantage providing additional comfort in what promises to be a fascinating return fixture.
