Forward Bukayo Saka returned to action in Arsenal’s 1-0 crucial Premier League victory over Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.
He replaced Noni Madueke in the 81st minute, making his first league appearance since the 2-0 win over Everton last month.
The victory saw Arsenal return to the top of the table, sitting three points clear of Manchester City, who have a game in hand.
Former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has described Saka’s return as ‘huge’ for Arsenal ahead of the final games of the season.
He said on The Wayne Rooney show: “Bukayo Saka has been great for Arsenal over the last few years – maybe this season he hasn’t hit the heights but he’s such an important player. So to get him back at this time of the season is going to be massive, it’s going to be really important.
“He’s clearly one of the leaders in there so to have him back is huge. “Having someone you know you can rely on out there is really important and all those Arsenal players know they can rely on Saka and know what he brings to the team. It’s huge for Arsenal, absolutely huge.”
Rooney also added that Saka’s timely comeback would uplift Arsenal’s dressing room as they continue their quest to win the league and the Champions League.
It now remains to be seen whether manager Mikel Arteta will start him in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg at Atletico Madrid.
Described as ‘unplayable‘ by former United defender Rio Ferdinand, Saka has nine goal involvements in the Champions League, the joint third-best tally in the Gunners squad.
He ranks first among his team-mates for shots on target, key passes and successful dribbles per game in the competition. He is also second for big chances, further underlining his attacking influence.
His decisiveness could prove crucial in breaking down an Atletico side, known for their defensive resilience.
