Arsenal twist: Arteta’s son fast-tracked after shock U18 debut

Mikel Arteta’s son, Gabriel Arteta Bernal, is progressing rapidly in his football career. After being promoted to the Under-17 team a few months ago, he recently made his debut in the Under-18 team. This is the first time he played professionally for Arsenal in the U-18.

How Mikel Arteta’s Son Has Advanced Within Arsenal?

Gabriel Arteta Bernal has advanced to a higher level within Arsenal youth football. He has currently played in the U-18 team. The match was played against Reading Football Club. The Arsenal’s U-18 defeated Reading by 3-0 at Bearwood Park.

However, Arteta’s son didn’t start the match. He came as a substitute at the 70th minute. On the field, he played alongside Ethan Nwaneri’s brother, Emerson Nwaneri. Emerson had supported the team’s win by scoring a goal. Gabriel is a 16-year-old. He has played Under-18 before against Ipswich Town, but as a substitute. The recent U-18 match was his first professional football match.

Gabriel had made his debut in the U-17 in the Premier League Cup against Watford. Now, after six months, he is playing U-18. This shows how quickly he is progressing. Unlike his father, Mikel Arteta, Gabriel plays on the sides of the field. Mikel Arteta used to play as a midfielder.

Mikel Arteta's son, Gabriel, is advancing rapidly in his football career.

Gabriel’s Training in Arsenal Started from a Young Age

Gabriel is the eldest of Mikel Arteta’s three sons. Gabriel was born in 2009 to Mikel Arteta and Lorena Bernal. The other two sons are Daniel and Oliver. In 2023, Gabriel went to the US as part of Arsenal’s pre-season trip. There he went not as a player. Instead, he went as a coaching staff assistant. This suggests that he has been learning since young.

The Successful Work of the Arsenal Staff Under Mikel Arteta

As per reports, Arsenal has hired Dean Barker in its recruitment team. Earlier, Dean Barker worked at Queens Park Rangers (QPR). There he was, the head, who used to bring in new talents. He has also worked as a PE teacher in a school. Ethan Nwaneri rose as a young talent from the same school. Though Nwaneri is from Arsenal, he is currently on loan at Marseille. He is also the youngest player of Arsenal.

The work of the staff became successful after Max Dowman became the latest young star. He is the Premier League’s youngest goalscorer. He became the spotlight after scoring a goal against Everton. However, before him, Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly have shown exemplary performances.

This season, the performance of both has slowed down. This has led to a player shift. Nwaneri has gone somewhere else to play on loan. Lewis-Skelly may get transferred to another club due to getting less playing time.

Bukayo Saka, one of Arsenal’s best players, has also come from the club’s youth academy. For seasons, he has performed as the best winger in the Premier League. He has signed a good deal with Arsenal. So, he will remain in the Arsenal team until 2030.

Mikel Arteta is Stressing on A Mix of Players

Arteta has always wanted his team on the winning side. He suggested the academy should have a mix of players. That is, half of the players should be homegrown. The other half should be from another club or country.

He said his goal is to consistently win the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. He has also mentioned Athletic Bilbao, which has been successful with only local players.
