Arsenal Football Club and its financial partner Airwallex recently commissioned Academy Award-winning director Spike Lee to direct a new short, titled Who Are Ya?, that captures the passion of the club’s fans, and helps audiences to understand exactly what Airwallex is.
Shot in a north London pub, close to the Arsenal stadium, the film features current and retired Arsenal players, such as Thierry Henry, Rachel Yankey and Kai Havertz, as well as genuine Arsenal fans, including famous ones like British actors Aaron Pierre and Jasmine Jobson.
Most famous of them all perhaps, is Spike Lee himself, a long-time follower of the club whose cameo role in the film sees him nestled in among other die-hard supporters, as he tries to encourage everyone else in the pub to “just watch the game”.
Meanwhile, other Gooners and Arsenal players – among which are Martin Keown, Gabriel Magalhães and Viktor Gyökeres – are busy discussing the finer details of Airwallex, including its impressive speed and clever features.
The film displays Lee’s trademark visual style, including his iconic ‘double dolly’ shot technique, and aims to tap into not only the excitement and buzz that occurs on game day, but also the financial fluency and curiosity of modern football fans. Gone are the days when followers of the sport are only interested in match results – now, it’s not uncommon to overhear conversations in the pub about a club’s spending strategies and financial situation.
Commenting on the collaboration, Lee says: “I wanted to capture that real supporter energy – the passion, the debates, the humour. Fans today don’t just follow the game, they understand everything around it too. Bringing Airwallex into that conversation felt natural, because the film plays on how fans now talk about the business side of football just as much as what happens on the pitch. This film is about that voice, that culture, and that community.”
