Arne Slot celebrates with his fist pumped in the air
Arne Slot's future has been in doubt after a tough season
Jason Cundy has cast doubt over Arne Slot’s ability to deliver further title success with Liverpool.
Slot enjoyed a dream debut season by delivering the Premier League title to Anfield but the current campaign has represented a clear regression, placing him under increasing scrutiny.
Despite recovering to push back into the top five, the drop-off in performance has raised doubts about the team’s trajectory, with Cundy is among those unconvinced that Slot is the right figure to lead Liverpool forward long term. It comes as Liverpool faces a dilemma over Xabi Alonso as the Chelsea shortlist emerges.

When asked about the long-term outlook at Liverpool if the Dutchman remains in charge, Cundy said on talkSPORT: “It feels like no because of what I have seen. It feels like a no for me. But listen, I can’t answer. Ask Liverpool fans if they feel he is capable.
“But I have seen Liverpool, and I didn’t think Liverpool were great last year. I genuinely didn’t. I just thought they were okay, and they won the league at a canter, but they have not kicked on, and there have been reasons.”
However, that assessment has been disputed, with the view that Liverpool was far from merely “okay” last season. Instead, they were dominant for extended periods, controlled the title race, and only eased off once the outcome was effectively decided.
There is a growing debate over whether the current manager can deliver another title at Liverpool, with this season exposing clear issues that cannot be ignored. However, a strong transfer window could help reset the trajectory and improve the overall picture.

Ultimately, Slot is expected to have fewer mitigating factors moving forward, and will face increased expectation to replicate the level of consistency and performance shown in his debut campaign.

Slot is expected to retain backing from the Liverpool hierarchy heading into a summer rebuild, with further squad changes anticipated following confirmation that Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson will be departing.

Cundy was also quick to praise Florian Wirtz following his latest standout contribution in the 3-1 win over Crystal Palace. “Wirtz scored an unbelievable goal today. Unbelievable strike. That’s the sort of thing you look at and go, ‘Yeah, that’s what you paid for. That looks like that type of player.’”
Liverpool.com says: Whether Slot can guide Liverpool to another title largely depends on how quickly he stabilises performance levels after a volatile season. The biggest test is whether he can regain the trust from supporters with Reds fans split on whether they want Slot in charge next season.
