Harry Kane has become the first English player to score in six consecutive Champions League games — beating the previous record, which was held by a Liverpool legend.

The Bayern Munich forward scored from the penalty spot in the first half against PSG after Luis Diaz had been fouled by Willian Pacho. Kane stepped up from 12 yards and dispatched his penalty, clinically firing low and into the corner of Matvei Safonov's goal.

In doing so, he overtook Steven Gerrard for the most consecutive games scored in by an English player in the competition. The Reds legend netted in five games in a row for Liverpool in the 2007-08 season.

Those goals in the Champions League were against Besiktas (twice), Porto, Marseille and Inter Milan. But Kane has gone one step further, scoring against PSG after Union Saint-Gilloise, PSV Eindhoven, Atalanta and Real Madrid.

Kane is only the second Bayern Munich player to score in five consecutive knockout round matches after Robert Lewandowski, who did it between 2016 to 2018.

PSG leveled through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and then Joao Neves put the French side in front with a header. Michael Olise smashed in a second for Bayern Munich soon after, Ousmane Dembele had time to net from the penalty spot before half-time.

Ten minutes into the second half, Kvaratskhelia scored his second of the night with a low effort that beat Manuel Neuer. And Dembele then netted PSG's fifth with a shot that left the German shot-stopper rooted to his spot.

To finish the scoring, Dayot Upamecano and Diaz both scored to make it 5-4. The second leg will take place in Munich next Wednesday at the Allianz Arena.

"You saw two high-level teams in attacking play and transition," Kane told Amazon Prime Sport at the final whistle.

"Overall, we look at their goals; the penalty was harsh but we could have killed the game earlier on. We fought and we clawed and we're back in the tie.

"I thought there was amazing defending even though there were nine goals. Sometimes the forwards will come out on top but the back line was outstanding today.

"You will always feel there are areas to improve on. We go to the Allianz with nothing to lose, we're at our best when we're intense and physical.

"It'll be who takes their moments next week, with the crowd behind us, we hope that can push us over the line."
