Liverpool should do whatever they can to try and lure Michael Olise to Anfield to become Mohamed Salah's replacement this summer, according to Jermaine Pennant. Salah is leaving the club at the end of the season and will leave behind big shoes to fill.

The Egyptian star has 257 goals in 440 appearances for Liverpool over the last nine seasons and may have already played his last game, following a hamstring injury on the weekend. The pressure is on the Liverpool recruitment team to deliver after last summer's window failed to have the desired impact.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has already said it is "probably impossible" to find a direct replacement for Salah, but RB Leipzig star Yan Diomande is among those being considered.

Olise has returned a remarkable 20 goals and 29 assists in 47 appearances for Bayern Munich this season following the staggering 5-4 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night in the Champions League semi-final. He is under contract with Bayern until 2029, having arrived from Crystal Palace back in 2024 for a reported £51million, but Pennant is convinced that his old club should chance their arm.

After watching Olise score a stunning goal in the dramatic game, he tweeted: "Liverpool go out and get Olise right now, at all costs. There is your replacement for Mo Salah. AT ALL COSTS. Any amount plus Gakpo."

Cody Gakpo has taken a fair bit of flak from Liverpool fans this season, having managed just eight goals and six assists in 48 games across all competitions. He still has four years left on his Reds contract.

It's fair to say that Pennant's hot take didn't go down too well, with many of the replies asking why Olise would want to trade Bayern for Liverpool right now, given they have just won the Bundesliga title at a canter and are in with a chance of winning the Treble.

Bayern certainly don't want to sell one of their star players either. Asked if Olise would be staying recently, Bayern chief executive Max Eberl said: “Absolutely.” And asked if that answer would stay the same, even if a huge offer came in, he said: “Yes. We’re not having a second to think about anything.”

Pennant's plea follows glowing praise from Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard for the Frenchman. “When you are a full-back playing up against a winger, they normally have a weak side and you show them one way or another, depending what foot they are," he said on TNT Sports.

“The problem with him is he can go both ways, his right foot is just as strong as his left. You really want to show him on his right foot because that’s probably his weaker side, but you see some of the assists he’s getting, some of the finishes with his right foot. If you leave him in one-versus-one situations, you are in major trouble.”
