'Impatient': Gary Neville can't get his head around what he's been hearing from Liverpool fans recently

It has been a difficult season for Liverpool, and fans have let their frustration be known.

Even during the win over Crystal Palace at the weekend, supporters were not happy with Arne Slot.

The football at Liverpool remains pretty average, and there does not seem to be a clear plan in place to improve the team.

However, Gary Neville is still pretty shocked that fans are not happy with Slot this season.

Gary Neville surprised Liverpool fans want Arne Slot gone

Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Manchester United man said: “What’s happened to Liverpool fans in this last 12 months? in my mind, from what I’ve seen, they’re a lot more impatient and a bit more booey.

“They have to say in a couple of games that I’ve seen, hasn’t been as good. Sometimes you have hungry tigers, sometimes you have fed tigers. A little bit like they’ve been fed a little bit too much over this last couple of years. And they’ve been to the Champions League finals, they’ve won two leagues. So they get a bit impatient.

“I just don’t get the idea that Slot wouldn’t be here next season and they wouldn’t sort of build around him. He’s had one bad season. He’s won a league in his first. He’s had a difficult season this year, but they’re still probably going to finish in the Champions League spaces.

“I think Slot should definitely be the manager next season and they should build around him, try and create a new team. Do I think they’ll be back to the best next season? No, I don’t think they’ll win the league next season, but I think they’ll get to a higher level than this season because I think they’ll add to the squad and they’ll refine it.”

Liverpool risk wasting another season with Arne Slot

Despite the fan unrest, the latest news is that Slot is staying at Anfield and will be in charge for 2026/27.

FSG generally show a lot of faith in managers, rather than adopting the Chelsea model and changing coaches what feels like every season.

However, in this case, Slot is yet to show after nearly a full season that he is able to turn this current slump around.

The mitigating factors behind the 2025/26 dip have been covered a lot, but surely now, we are nearly in May, there should be some signs that things are getting better?

Wins over Manchester United and Chelsea in the coming weeks could change the mood around the club. But right now, it feels like we will be in a situation come late 2026 when Liverpool need to change managers anyway and at that point, they may already be behind in the title race, and a lot of the top head coaches will be unavailable.
