A reliable Merseyside reporter has said there is “doubt” regarding Alexis Mac Allister‘s future, with no contract negotiations yet taking place.
Mac Allister has looked a shadow of himself this season. Less running power, less attacking output and less quality on the ball have seen him go from Liverpool’s best midfielder to a man lucky to make the starting XI.
At 27 years old, the Argentine shouldn’t yet be past his peak, but the signs on the pitch aren’t good.
*The Times*‘ Paul Joyce has now written that there is “doubt surrounding the future of Mac Allister” with no negotiations taking place regarding a contract extension.

For a player whose deal doesn’t expire until 2028, that may not be a massive surprise.
However, there have been discussions with Liverpool’s other key midfielders, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai, who both signed five-year deals when they arrived three years ago.
Gravenberch signed a bumper new six-year contract in March that will see him earn about £280,000 per week, according to De Telegraaf.
Meanwhile, there have been talks with Szoboszlai’s people, but “there has been no real progression,” the Hungarian commented on April 19.
He added: “I see myself here in the long term, but as I say, it is not really in my hands any more. I love being here, as I said many times. I’m completely relaxed.”

With the latest reports indicating no talks have taken place, Mac Allister has been reflecting on his position and what he may want from the rest of his career.
In March, the Argentine said: “We are not in contract talks, but I’m not in a rush.”
Mac Allister recently added that he is looking to eventually move back to Argentina, with a view to representing former clubs Argentinos Juniors and Boca Juniors again.
“I’d love to return to Argentinos Juniors because my dad and my brothers all grew up there and we’re grateful,” he said.
“And then, obviously, to Boca at some point.”
Back in 2024, he also spoke to AS about how he would one day like to play in Spain.
Mac Allister said: “It’s a country I like a lot and I’ve visited it several times, and, above all, because of the language and the culture. It’s very similar to Argentina.”
With Curtis Jones‘s contract coming to an end in 2027 and speculation about his future mounting, Liverpool could need to refresh their midfield soon.
It doesn’t feel like long since Jurgen Klopp did exactly that in 2023. Ideally, Mac Allister will come back to form and, simultaneously, change Liverpool’s fortunes.
However, there is no guarantee that he will manage that in this age of physical Premier League football.
