€50m Tottenham star, now hit by injury, identified as Bastoni’s alternative by Barcelona

Cristian Romero is widely expected to leave Tottenham at the end of the season.

It is widely believed that Cristian Romero has played his last game in a Tottenham Hotspur shirt.

The 2022 World Cup winner suffered a knee injury in the 1-0 away defeat to Sunderland earlier this month and has been subsequently ruled out for the rest of the campaign. Fortunately, he has escaped surgery, which could have seen him miss out on the summer’s World Cup.

Even if Spurs stay up, the €50m Cristian Romero is expected to leave the club at the end of the season. The 28-year-old, who penned a new contract with the North London club last August until 2029, is on the radar of Atletico Madrid. Meanwhile, it emerged a couple of days ago that Manchester United have set their sights on the Tottenham skipper to bolster their backline ahead of returning to the Champions League.

Nine months after handing him a new contract, Tottenham are now considering a possible sale. They would be open to accepting a fee worth around €60-65 million for Romero’s signature.

Barcelona identify Cristian Romero as Alessandro Bastoni’s alternative

Barcelona are actively looking to bring in a new centre-back for the 2026/27 campaign, with Inter Milan star Alessandro Bastoni being the undisputed choice. However, negotiations with Inter Milan could prove to be tricky, with the Serie A not willing to lower their €70 million demand for Bastoni. The sky-high valuation of Inter Milan’s reliable defender has now forced Barcelona to look for alternatives.

According to Spanish newspaper Diario Sport, Barcelona sporting director Deco has lined up Romero as an alternative target for Bastoni. The La Liga giants have already established contact with the Tottenham star’s representatives to discuss a potential move.

Barcelona feel Romero ‘fits all the requirements’ they are looking for in a new central defender, the report adds. The Argentina international has been a mainstay in the Spurs defence for many years, impressing his suitors with his leadership skills, reading of the game, ability on the ball and experience. Having just turned 28, the Cordoba-born talent can also provide the prime years of his career to the Hansi Flick-managed club.

A World Cup winner, Romero would not only enhance Barca’s defensive unit but also act as a mentor for the talented young centre-back, Pau Cubarsi. He’d be an upgrade over the inconsistent Ronald Araujo. From Tottenham’s perspective, the club bosses would be open to selling the Argentine if their pricing ask is met, with Romero’s father, Victor, claiming he has a release clause of £37.8m-£53m in his contract.

It remains to be seen whether Barca makes a concrete attempt to sign Romero. If the Catalan giants knock on Tottenham’s door, Romero would ideally not turn down a move.
