Arsenal will head back to the Emirates Stadium with a 1-1 aggregate scoreline from their Champions League semi-final first leg against Atletico Madrid.

The Gunners were a goal up on the stroke of half time as Viktor Gyokeres emphatically tucked away a penalty after the Swede had been bundled over by David Hancko in the box.

Atleti were themselves awarded a spot-kick in the second half as Marcos Llorente’s strike hit Ben White’s arm, and Julian Alvarez converted from 12 yards to level the scores.

Mikel Arteta’s men thought they had themselves a second penalty of the evening as Hancko was once again deemed the guilty party, tripping Eberechi Eze, before the VAR overruled the decision.

The scoreline remained untroubled, and both sides will go again in north London next week.

More to follow.
