Atletico Madrid 1-1 Arsenal – player ratings

Arsenal will take a 1-1 draw back to North London after a compelling first leg in Madrid this evening.

The Gunners were good in the first half, and went ahead through Viktor Gyokeres after the Swedish striker was fouled in the box, before he stepped up to smash home the spot kick. The home side got a penalty of their own in the second period when the ball somewhat unfortunately hit Ben White’s hand in the box, and Julian Alvarez levelled with a thumping finish of his own.

The home side had second half chances, hitting the bar at one point, but after Eberechi Eze was fouled in the box and the ref pointed to the spot again, the referee and VAR somehow decided to overturn the decision.

On balance perhaps a draw is fair, but Arsenal will feel a little hard done by despite bring a decent result back home for the second leg.

Here’s how the players rated…
