Ben White angered Giuliano Simeone after he walked over Atletico Madrid’s badge on the way to the dressing room (Marca)
Diego Simeone clashed with Ben White in the aftermath of Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night.
Arsenal took the lead shortly before half time through Viktor Gyokeres’ penalty but Julian Alvarez’s spot kick in the 56th minute ensured that Atletico will take a draw to the Emirates Stadium for the return leg next Tuesday.
The game was not without controversy as before kick off, Arsenal were unhappy with the length of the grass at the Metropolitano Stadium, while Mikel Arteta was furious with the decision to overturn Eberechi Eze’s penalty claim in the second half.
Referee Danny Makkelie initially awarded a penalty after David Hancko had made contact with Eze’s foot, however, the Dutch official reversed his decision after reviewing the incident on the VAR screen.
After the full-time whistle, tensions rose once again after White walked over Atletico’s badge – a sign of disrespect – in the tunnel area as he made his way back to the dressing room.
Giuliano Simeone, who is Diego Simeone’s youngest son, was offended by White’s gesture and approached the Arsenal defender.
Diego Simeone then stepped in and pulled Giuliano away before he also spoke to White and slapped him on the back multiple times.
White was clearly irked by Diego Simeone’s response as he pushed the Argentine. Players and staff close to the incident then rushed in to separate the pair.
