Arsenal Women hit Leicester for seven to ignite WSL title race

Arsenal Women thrashed Leicester City 7-0 in the Women’s Super League at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The result is Arsenal’s biggest win under coach Renee Slegers. They have climbed to third on the table, eight points behind leaders Manchester City, with two games in hand.

Arsenal need to win their remaining four games, while City lose at least one of their final two features to win the title.

Frida Maanum, who was marking her 100th appearance in the competition broke the deadlock in the 25th minute, as her header nestled in off the post.

Two minutes later, Maanum set up Arsenal’s second goal, threading a pass through to Smilla Holmberg, who slotted past the goalkeeper for her first goal for the club.

Maanum was the provider again, chipping the ball brilliantly to Stina Blackstenius, who glanced her header to the far post for 3-0.

Blackstenius added a fourth before the interval, pouncing on a defensive mistake to rifle the ball home.

Arsenal picked up from where they left off before the break, adding to their tally three minutes into the second period.

Olivia Smith delivered a sublime cross to the far post where Holmberg was waiting to put the ball into an empty net.

Mariona Caldentey then got on the scoresheet, slotting past Katie Keane in the Leicester goal, bagging Arsenal’s sixth goal in the clash.

Leah Williamson completed the rout in the 63rd minute, heading Holmberg’s corner over the goalkeeper.

The result put Arsenal in good shape ahead of Saturday’s Champions League semi-final second leg tie at Lyon. They head into the game with a 2-1 lead.
