Injury opens door to Manchester City talent – Defender now in real World Cup contention

Manchester City defender Vitor Reis has emerged as a serious contender for Brazil’s World Cup squad, even before returning to the Etihad this summer.

The 20-year-old centre-back has become a key figure at Girona, and recent developments in the national team setup have opened the door further.

Real Madrid’s confirmation of Éder Militão’s injury has created a gap in Brazil’s defence ahead of the final squad announcement.

According to Brazilian outlet RTI Esporte, Vitor Reis is now gaining traction behind the scenes as part of Carlo Ancelotti’s thinking, following his first senior call-up earlier this year.

The Manchester City player has built his case through consistency. He has featured heavily in LaLiga this season, becoming the Brazilian defender with the most minutes across Europe’s top five leagues.

He has also stood out statistically, leading Brazilian players in Spain for tackles and pass accuracy, while ranking near the top for clearances.

Momentum building after first Brazil call-up

That first experience with the senior squad appears to have shifted his mindset. In a recent interview, Vitor Reis admitted the World Cup is now firmly on his radar.

“Living that environment [national team] makes the dream feel more real and, at the same time, increases the responsibility. You come back with even more desire to work and improve because you understand what it takes to get there. Playing in the 2026 World Cup has become an even clearer goal in my mind,” he said.

The defender also highlighted how quickly he adapted during his initial time with the group.

“I was very well received from the moment I arrived. In training, I was able to express myself and play with confidence. I also had some quick conversations with more experienced players, who gave me confidence and simple but very valuable advice.”

Those interactions left a lasting impression.

“They are things that stay in your mind and serve as fuel to keep improving,” he added.

Ancelotti contact and key strengths

Vitor Reis also revealed he had direct contact with Ancelotti, which further reinforced his belief that he can compete at that level.

“We had a conversation. It was brief, but very important. He and the staff spoke about the characteristics they like in my game, especially my build-up play and defensive reading,” he explained.

Those traits have defined his season in Spain. Since arriving in Europe, the Manchester City defender has adapted quickly to the demands of the game.

“I have improved a lot in several aspects since I arrived in Europe. The game here is more intense, more tactical, and requires quick decisions all the time. I think I have grown a lot in positioning, concentration and physically.”

He believes his overall profile sets him apart.

“I think my strength is the combination of these characteristics. I try to be a solid defender, but also contribute with the ball, with good build-up and vision. I have a strong desire to learn and improve.”

What happens next

With Militão out and Brazil seeking balance between experience and renewal, Vitor Reis now finds himself in a genuine race for a place in the final squad. The list will be announced on May 19, and competition remains strong.

However, his form at Girona and growing confidence at international level have changed his status. What once looked like a long-term ambition is now a realistic short-term objective. And with recent chats with Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola, he surely is not lacking any guidance.

If selected, Vitor Reis could head into next season at the Etihad not just as a returning loanee, but as a World Cup player pushing for a role in Guardiola’s squad.
