Steven Gerrard looks to be edging closer to the Burnley job after it was confirmed that Scott Parker has been fired by the relegated Premier League side.
Gerrard last managed a club in the Saudi Pro League, but departed his role as Al-Ettifaq's manager in January 2025.
Were Gerrard to get the Burnley job, he would surely be targeting an immediate return to the Premier League with the Clarets, who have been either promoted or relegated in each of the last four seasons.
For Parker, it is the third time that he has left a club within a year of achieving promotion to the top flight, having also departed Fulham in 2021 and Bournemouth in 2022.

"It has been an immense privilege to lead this great club over the past two years," said Parker.
"I have enjoyed every moment of our journey together, but feel that now is the right time for both parties to move in a different direction.
"I reflect back with great pride on what we achieved during my time at the club, especially our unforgettable promotion season in 2024-25, and it was a true honour to lead this team into the Premier League."
As for Gerrard, he is bidding to rebuild his managerial reputation after underwhelming spells at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq.
Gerrard and other ex-players from his generation who harbor managerial ambitions have been encouraged by what Frank Lampard has achieved as Coventry City manager.
Lampard's stock was extremely low when he finished his previous managerial job, as Chelsea's interim manager in 2023, winning just one of his 11 games in charge.

That interim stint followed a disappointing spell at Everton, which saw him fired with a win rate of just 27 percent after 12 months at Goodison Park.
However, Lampard has rebuilt his reputation since taking over at Coventry last November, taking the Sky Blues into the Championship play-offs in 2025 before winning the league and gaining promotion to the Premier League this season.
Gerrard is also targeting a reputational revival, having seen his own managerial career follow a similar trajectory to Lampard.
The former Liverpool midfielder's first managerial role saw him guide Rangers to the Scottish title for the first time in 10 years.

Lampard's first managerial role at Derby saw him take the team into the Championship play-offs, which ultimately earned him a shot at the Chelsea job.
Gerrard, meanwhile, got his first Premier League job with Villa, and both men were ultimately fired from their first jobs in the English top flight, before further disappointments with Everton and Al-Ettifaq for Lampard and Gerrard, respectively.
