Steven Gerrard odds-on favourite for Burnley job after Scott Parker sacked

Steven Gerrard is expected to return to management this summer and is a strong candidate to replace Scott Parker at Burnley after his departure was confirmed.

Parker left Burnley by mutual consent on Thursday morning after their relegation to the Championship was confirmed last week.

The 45-year-old was not backed to earn immediate promotion back to the Premier League with a third season in charge, despite having led the Clarets to a 100-point campaign in 2024/25.

It leaves Burnley searching for a new manager, with Gerrard the odds-on favourite to take over at Turf Moor.

Earlier this week, the Independent‘s Miguel Delaney and talkSPORT‘s Alex Crook both reported on Burnley‘s interest in the Liverpool legend.

Gerrard, who has also been offered the job at Bristol City, is open to a move to the Championship after previous roles in charge of Rangers, Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq.

He left Al-Ettifaq in January 2025 and has since returned to the UK, but now tax-exempt in Saudi Arabia he is free to take up another role.

His odds of becoming next Burnley manager are as low as 4/7 with bookmakers, with Craig Bellamy (5/1), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (7/1), Liam Rosenior (9/1) and Thomas Frank (10/1) also considered in the running.

Burnley have yo-yoed between Premier League and Championship since a six-season spell in the top flight ended in 2022, and if he takes over Gerrard will be tasked with leading them back into the elite.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast earlier this month, the former Liverpool captain hinted at his desire to return to management – though he dismissed suggestions he could take an interim role at Anfield.

“I’ve got a brilliant connection with the club, I always have, and probably a stronger connection since I left. They’ve always been unbelievable,” he said.

“Any area I could help the club in, I’d always try to do it if I could.

“But I suppose what you want to know is do I want to manage Liverpool at some point in my life? Of course, that’d be a dream.

“Would I be ready for it right now, to take it over a period of time? Probably not.

“But is there a possibility in the future to be beside someone, those elite managers you’re talking about?

“It depends who it is and how the conversation goes. Does he need me? What does he think I can offer? As long as I’m not sub I’ll be fine!”
