Arteta’s tactical gamble pays off as Arsenal take control against Atletico

Mikel Arteta’s bold tactical decisions proved crucial as Arsenal secured a valuable 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid in their Champions League semi-final first leg, leaving the Gunners as favourites to reach the final.

The Arsenal manager made three significant gambles that could have backfired spectacularly. With question marks over fitness and Saturday’s Premier League clash with Fulham looming, Arteta chose to start both Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka on the bench despite the magnitude of the semi-final.

Instead, Arsenal lined up with a front three of Noni Madueke, Viktor Gyokeres and Gabriel Martinelli – a combination that has regularly disappointed this season. The risk was compounded by deploying this attacking trio on European football’s biggest stage.

Midfield masterstroke

---------------------

According to [the Evening Standard](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/arsenal-fc-arteta-triple-gamble-atletico-b1280528.html), Arteta’s most inspired decision came in midfield, where he moved Declan Rice to a deeper number six role alongside the centre-backs in possession, while pushing Martin Zubimendi further up the pitch.

The tactical tweak proved transformative. Rice was able to dictate play while providing defensive cover, stopping Atletico’s counter-attacks and helping Arsenal control possession. Zubimendi, who has looked exhausted in recent months, benefited from reduced defensive responsibilities and enjoyed greater freedom higher up the field.

Both players looked reinvigorated and as fresh as they had appeared in weeks, with the midfield partnership bringing far greater control to Arsenal’s play.

Front three delivers

--------------------

Despite concerns over the attacking selection, Arsenal’s front line performed admirably in the first half. Madueke looked sharp on the right wing while Gyokeres enjoyed one of his better 45-minute displays in an Arsenal shirt, holding up play effectively and converting a penalty with authority.

The visitors were excellent in the opening period and could have secured a better result, with two controversial penalty decisions favouring Atletico Madrid preventing a more commanding advantage.

Saka and Eze were introduced for just 30 minutes from the bench, meaning both should be fresh for Saturday’s crucial Premier League encounter with Fulham. Riccardo Calafiori was unused entirely, potentially with the weekend fixture in mind.

The 1-1 result leaves Arsenal as favourites to progress, knowing victory at the Emirates Stadium will be sufficient to reach the Champions League final. The performance also boosts their hopes of extending their Premier League lead to six points with victory over Fulham.

With the second leg representing Arsenal’s final midweek fixture of the campaign, squad management will become significantly easier. The Gunners remain in pursuit of both the Premier League title and Champions League glory, competitions that have eluded the club for 22 and 71 years respectively.
