“Year to wish for” – Player describes dream season as he edges to signing for Arsenal

Arsenal target Vasilije Kostov has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo is his idol, but he has no interest in being compared to anyone.

Sport Srbija have an interview with the 17-year-old today in which he discusses various topics. That includes comparisons to the likes of Barcelona star Pedri.

Rising star at Red Star

Vasilije Kostov has been earning rave reviews at Red Star this season, where he’s just become champion for the second time.

This season he has 14 goals and seven assists in 42 games in all competitions, building on last season when he had 15 goals and one assist in 31 games in all competitions.

He’s very much a rising star and the Premier League is already moving. Arsenal first made a move in February, while a report earlier this month stated that they were outbidding the competition for him.

A new report today then stated that Arsenal are on the verge of a deal for the midfielder. In fact, he was already packing his bags ahead of moving to London. He didn’t have anything to say about that but admits that this year has been a big one for him.

“This is really a year to wish for, the season lasts a long time, but I can say that it has been successful for me,” he said.

“I did my best to help Red Star. I hope we win the double crown this year too. Of course, I wouldn’t have achieved what I have if it weren’t for my family, teammates and coaching staff.”

Cristiano Ronaldo and comparisons to Pedri

The youngster was then asked about already being seen as an idol by Red Star. That’s a big honour for a player whose career hasn’t’ even properly begun.

It’s a status he’s happy to have, despite only being 17 years old. But his age also means he has his own idols still in the game.

“I’m happy about that,” he added.

“I hope that I am a favorite and idol to some little ones who are just starting to play football and that they can learn something from me. As a child, I watched a lot of Cristiano Ronaldo, so I would single him out.”

What he’s less happy about is comparisons to other players. Some have likened him to Barcelona’s Pedri, but he’s having none of that.

“I generally don’t care about comparisons. It doesn’t affect me,” he insisted.

“I always try to be myself. I think I do what I love the best I know how, I don’t have any pressure, I simply enjoy football.”
