Liverpool battling Man Utd to signing of"very important"Champions League winner - journalist

**Liverpool are among the clubs who could look to sign Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni this summer, with Manchester United also keen.**

The Reds have toiled in midfield this season, with Alexis Mac Allister a far cry from the player who shone so much in his first two years at Anfield.

Ryan Gravenberch has also struggled sitting in front of the No.6, and it could be that Liverpool look to sign more of an out-and-out defensive midfielder this summer.

According to a fresh report from [_Caught Offside_](https://www.caughtoffside.com/2026/04/30/aurelien-tchouameni-transfer-liverpool-man-united/)‘s Mark Brus, the Reds “still have an interest” in Tchouameni, ahead of a potential auction for his signature at the end of the season. The France international could cost as much £77.9m.

Brus goes on to add: _“This is not exactly surprising and doesn’t mean a move is happening, but things can change quickly in football, so if Los Blancos decide they want to make a few sales under a new manager, then we can expect United and Liverpool to be sniffing around for Tchouameni.”_

**Can Aurelien Tchouameni help transform Liverpool’s midfield?**

----------------------------------------------------------------

Tchouameni is such an impressive footballer, winning the Champions League with Madrid and often being one of the most unsung figures in the team since arriving from Monaco in the summer of 2022.

[Carlo Ancelotti](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/aurelien-tchouameni-toni-kroos-luka-modric-carlo-ancelotti-defends-real-madrid-midfielder-ongoing-criticism/bltb625d4ac60631d38) once perfectly summed up his brilliance, saying there are creative limitations to his game, but he is a hugely influential figure:

_“Tchouameni… What else can I say? He is a very important player, very important for us. Because he has the exact characteristics. He will never be Kroos, Modric or Ceballos. But Ceballos cannot be Tchouameni, just as Kroos and Modric aren’t.”_

It is easy to forget that Tchouameni is still only 26, having achieved so much in his career to date, so he could excel at the heart of Liverpool’s midfield for another five or six years, bringing physicality, quality and intelligence on and off the ball.

It clearly isn’t going to be easy for the Reds to sign him, though, both in terms of Madrid potentially wanting to keep him in the end, and also some other Premier League clubs battling for his signature.
