Liverpool decided to part ways with Tyler Morton during last summer’s transfer window.

AFC Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott has hailed the progress Tyler Morton has made since leaving Liverpool.

Morton came through the Reds’ academy and had successful loan spells at Blackburn Rovers and Hull City. But as Liverpool captured the Premier League title last season, Morton did not make a single appearance. He played just five times in all competitions for Arne Slot’s side, with Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo preferred in the middle of the park.

Last summer, Morton opted to leave his boyhood club and joined Olympique Lyonnais for a fee of £15 million. The former England under-21 international has thrived since moving to the French outfit, playing 41 matches and scoring twice. Lyon are third in Ligue 1 and beat Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month.

And Scott, who played alongside Morton at England age-group level, told of his delight that the Wirral-born midfielder is thriving in his career.

“I think it was a great decision for him (to leave Liverpool for Lyon), he is smashing it at the minute,” Scott told The Athletic. “He’s an unbelievable player.”

“I think Liverpool fans saw that years ago when he was bossing it at the San Siro (against AC Milan in the Champions League in 2021-22). He didn’t really get his opportunity last year. Obviously, it was tough in a team that was doing so well going for the league.

“In his head, I think it was time to move on and play first-team football,” Scott added.

“He was playing a lot of 21s football as well, but a player of his standard needs to be playing week in, week out, for one of the top teams in the world. I speak to him quite a lot, he is an unbelievable guy. I’m so, so happy that he’s doing so well.“

In total, Morton made 14 appearances for Liverpool.
