The hidden Anthony Gordon clause that could frustrate Newcastle United transfer saga

Speculation surrounding Anthony Gordon’s future at Newcastle United has ramped up in recent weeks.

Everton are understood to have a 15 per cent sell-on clause in Anthony Gordon’s contract.

Newcastle United paid an initial £40million to sign the winger three years ago. An additional £5million in performance-related add-ons was also inserted as part of the deal.

Speculation surrounding the 25-year-old has ramped up in recent weeks. Gordon has been sidelined, further fuelling the transfer rumours as conspiracies emerge about his fitness.

Newcastle insiders insist the hip injury was genuine, with Gordon now back in training and working towards a potential return this weekend. But as mentioned, the wideman’s absence has only made the noise around his future grow louder.

Anthony Gordon transfer saga

Bayern Munich are the current club linked with a potential summer swoop. German reports claim that, while the Bundesliga club admire Gordon, they view his £75million price tag as steep.

Toon chiefs desperately do not wish to see another Alexander Isak situation unfold. The Swede derailed the club’s window last year, with Newcastle not cashing in until deadline day.

If Gordon expressed his desire to leave, the Magpies would not stand in his way. However, Newcastle will also not let the England international - contracted until 2030 - leave on the cheap.

Everton sell-on clause

It has always been understood that Everton added a sell-on clause to Gordon’s initial contract. While he penned an extension in October 2024, that did not negate the original agreement.

The Athletic report that Gordon’s clause is set at 15 per cent. This is sizable, giving Everton an £11.25million windfall if Newcastle were to fetch £75million.

The Magpies suffered the consequences of a sell-on agreement last summer. Real Sociedad banked 10 per cent on the profit Newcastle made on Isak, who joined for £63million three years earlier.

Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon links

Eddie Howe downplayed the Gordon links as part and parcel of Premier League management earlier this month. However, his comments relating to commitment - only for Gordon to be injured 24 hours later - triggered the uncertainty.

“I think that comes with the territory,” Howe said. “I think your best players will be the ones who are linked with high-profile moves.”

“The one thing I’m not going to do is play a player if they are not 100 per cent committed to the club and its future. That commitment and resolve, what the player gives to the team, has to be total.

“I’m not talking about Anthony here, I’m talking generally across the board. I have to do what is right for the team and I will continue to do that.”
