Matheus Cunha took part in Manchester United training on Thursday ahead of Sunday's clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford. The Brazil international was not spotted at Carrington last week in the build-up to the Reds' fixture against Brentford. United confirmed the 26-year-old was absent due to being on a recovery day.

However, he would go on to miss the game earlier this week. Michael Carrick confirmed pre-match the injury was not thought to be serious. "[Cunha] just had a bit of a sore hip flexor after the Chelsea game the other day," the interim boss told Sky Sports.

"He was looking promising during the week, so we thought he might have been okay, but he just didn’t quite recover quick enough. It is nothing too serious, but unfortunately he doesn’t make it tonight."

Any fears that Cunha's injury was substantial have now been eased as United confirmed he took part in group training. The forward's return is a boost for United. In his last outing, Cunha scored the winner as the Reds beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. He has contributed two goals and two assists in his last six Premier League appearances.

Carrick is expected to provide further injury updates during his pre-match press conference this afternoon. Matthijs de Ligt is a long-term absentee having not played since the 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace in November.

United were also boosted by the return of Patrick Dorgu to their matchday squad earlier this week. The Dane has been missing since scoring in the 3-2 victory over Arsenal.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has confirmed Mohamed Salah will miss Sunday's clash with United. Their first-choice goalkeeper Alisson is a major doubt for the fixture too.
