Mikel Arteta has issued an Arsenal fitness update ahead of facing Fulham

Mikel Arteta has issued an Arsenal injury update ahead of his side's must-win clash against Fulham.

The Gunners can move six points ahead of second-place Manchester City with victory as Pep Guardiola's hungry challengers are not in action until Monday evening when they travel to European hopefuls Everton.

The bad news is, Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber won't be ready to face the Cottagers on Saturday.

Arteta said of the duo: "Kai and Jurrien will be out" before also adding that he did not believe the club had picked up any fresh fitness issues following their midweek 1-1 Champions League semi-final draw at Atletico Madrid.

He added: "I think so [no fresh injury problems], let's see how everyone is tomorrow morning. We haven't been able to train much."

There is also doubt over the availability of captain Martin Odegaard, who was forced off in the second half at the Metropolitano.

When asked if he'll be ready to feature this weekend, Arteta said: "Let's see."

The Norwegian has been hampered by a knee injury, first sustained in the 1-1 draw at Brentford in February, over the past few months.

He has endured several spells on the sidelines but has been back starting matches over the past few weeks as he bids to help the Gunners get over the line in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Arteta's comment appears to suggest it's not a given the Norwegian will be ready to play against Marco Silva's side at the Emirates Stadium tomorrow.

Bukayo Saka made his second successive cameo from the bench in Spain while Riccardo Calafiori was back among the substitutes following his recent knock.

Timber is thought to be edging closer to a return following his groin problem but he has now spent in excess of seven weeks out with the injury.

Havertz's groin issue is not believed to be as bad as initially feared and he could yet play a part in Arsenal's season.

Mikel Merino could yet return in the coming weeks too following foot surgery.
