Liverpool Predicted XI vs. Man United: Right wing dilemma but Jones retained

Arne Slot has injuries to consider as he plots a victory that could move Liverpool past Man United into third, but he will hope two regulars are fit to return.

After a week between games, Liverpool’s push to secure Champions League qualification takes them to Old Trafford, though Slot has selection dilemmas to consider.

He might have a late call to make for his starting goalkeeper, while there is a balance to strike at right-back, midfield and across the attack.

A week between games affords more flexibility, and here’s a look at how the Reds could lineup on Sunday afternoon.

If Alisson is still not ready to return, Freddie Woodman will make his second successive start – with this one of Slot’s more straightforward calls.

Curtis Jones has impressed at right-back, and with Salah injured and Jeremie Frimpong needed on the right wing, it will be of no surprise to see the Scouser keep his place.

Andy Robertson would be unlucky to lose out to Kerkez, but if it is better to rest the Hungarian again after his minor issues, then the vice-captain is a trusted option.

In midfield, Ryan Gravenberch should mark his return alongside Dominik Szoboszlai, which leaves Alexis Mac Allister as the one left out this time around.

Florian Wirtz will hope to continue building a connection behind Alexander Isak, with Cody Gakpo retained on the left wing:

Woodman; Jones, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Szoboszlai; Frimpong, Wirtz, Gakpo; Isak

The alternative to that lineup would be to shift Szoboszlai to the right, which would allow Mac Allister to slot in alongside Gravenberch in midfield.

This would also afford flexibility, with the potential for Wirtz and Szoboszlai to play off Gakpo and Isak up top and pull United’s defence apart.

Frimpong would, therefore, be left out of the lineup for the third game in succession, with Jones having earned his place in defence.

Should Kerkez prove his fitness, he can expect to slot straight back in after seven minutes across the last two games.

And it goes without saying that Alisson will come straight back in if deemed ready:

Woodman; Jones, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Szoboszlai, Wirtz, Gakpo; Isak

With Man United conceding in all but one of their last seven games, there is a route to goal for Liverpool, but they have to be ruthless when the opportunity presents itself.

A big step towards Champions League qualification can be taken on Sunday, but Slot’s side have to show consistency throughout the 90 minutes if they’re to replicate last season’s result.

A week’s rest ought to be beneficial, but the proof will come on Sunday.
