Liverpool have been handed a boost in their efforts to sign Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, following a big exit claim from Fabrizio Romano.
Gordon grew up as a Reds supporter during his childhood, prior to playing for Everton and then sealing a move to Newcastle in 2023.
Liverpool have been backed to sign him since then, including last summer, but he ended up staying put at St James’ Park, scoring 10 goals in the Champions League this season.
Now, speaking on his YouTube channel [via Caught Offside], Romano has said there is now “serious chances” of Gordon leaving Newcastle at the end of the current campaign, potentially alerting the Reds and other clubs.
“I tell you today that Anthony Gordon has really serious chances to leave Newcastle in the summer transfer windoew. At the moment, Bayern are really interested in the player. Premier League clubs could also appear on scene quite soon.
“So, it’s between Bayern and Premier League at this stage, but Anthony Gordon is attracting serious interest and could be one of the names to watch. Depends also on the price tag Newcastle will decide. But according to my information, there is a serious strong possibility to see Anthony Gordon leaving Newcastle United in the summer transfer window.”
Is Anthony Gordon worth the money for Liverpool?
Gordon is said to be valued at £80m by Newcastle, which would clearly be a huge amount for Liverpool to spend on one player, given the need to strengthen in several positions.
Whether he is worth that much is up for debate – he is English, and homegrown players are often more expensive – but there is a lot to like about the idea of him in a Reds shirt.
Gordon has pace in abundance, which has been lacking with Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo down the flanks this season, and his finishing continues to improve, as highlighted by his aforementioned Champions League tally this season.
The fact that he is a boyhood Liverpool supporter can’t be a bad thing either, as there should be no doubts about his commitment to the cause over a long period.
Ultimately, the Reds would be signing a Premier League-proven player with his best years ahead of him, so splashing out £80m may be worth the risk.
