Paul Joyce: Liverpool plotting move to offer 23-year-old star in Yan Diomande swap deal

Liverpool are ready to offer one of their players in a swap deal for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande should talks over a move progress, according to Times journalist Paul Joyce.

Liverpool are already planning for the summer transfer window where they are ready to back Arne Slot with new signings after a difficult 2025-26 campaign.

The Reds are in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League after three successive Premier League wins, and could still end the season in third position if they can leapfrog Manchester United.

Overall though, it has been a disappointing defence of their title, with the Merseyside outfit losing 10 of their 34 top flight fixtures this term.

Liverpool chiefs understand there have been mitigating circumstances though, including the devastating death of Diogo Jota last summer, as well as the injury situations around the likes of club-record signing Alexander Isak this season.

Big changes are already afoot in terms of the playing squad with Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson already confirmed to be leaving, while doubts remain over the future of Ibrahima Konate, with no progress on a new contract with his current one expiring at the end of June.

Liverpool Could Offer Harvey Elliott in Yan Diomande Deal

There are doubts over other members of the Liverpool squad too, including Alexis Mac Allister, Alisson, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott, who has had a wasted season of his career.

The 23-year-old joined Aston Villa on loan with an obligation to buy if he made 10 appearances last summer, but manager Unai Emery quickly decided he wasn't a player he wanted and his minutes have been severely limited ever since.

According to Joyce, Liverpool are assessing a summer move for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, but the exciting Ivorian has a price tag set at £85m by the Bundesliga club.

The Reds could look to reduce that by offering Elliott in a deal, with Leipzig being prepared to bid around £20m for the 23-year-old last year prior to his switch to Villa Park.

Should talks formally progress with Liverpool over Diomande, Joyce believes the Merseyside outfit could mention Elliott as a way of bringing down Diomande's sky-high price tag.

Diomande Can Be Salah's Long-Term Replacement

There is a reason why every top club across Europe is tracking the progress of Diomande, even though he is only 19 years of age.

The Ivory Coast international looks to be Europe's next exciting young winger to emerge, and he has been in outstanding form for Leipzig this season.

The teenager has 13 goals and nine assists in 33 appearances in all competitions for the German side in 2025-26, and has been compared to Manchester City's Antoine Semenyo by one journalist.

Given the goal contribution numbers he is already producing before his 20th birthday, Diomande looks to have a huge future in the game and he is showing signs that he has the potential to replicate the numbers that Salah has for Liverpool in recent years.

The issue for interested suitors will be his price tag and whether they can drive it down.

Liverpool may have the perfect bargaining tool in Elliott, and they will hope that Leipzig's previous interest in the player could help them strike a deal.
