Premier League legend Thierry Henry reckons that he “would have died” if he had to play in the “overanalysed” era of football today.

The former France and Arsenal forward has warned current coaches not to stifle creative players by suppressing any fun on the pitch. Henry - who scored 228 goals for The Gunners - described the modern game as being “like tactical chess” with an emphasis on “control” and avoiding risk.

And the 48-year-old, who is hailed as one of the most creative stars to ever play the game, reckons he would struggle to perform in such an environment.

Speaking at Samsung’s #WatchItOnASamsung event in North London, he said: “The game at times is like tactical chess . . . [managers] want to control something a lot, and so it’s very difficult to tell the guy to do whatever he wants.

“Everything is overanalysed. We are opening ourselves to go into position to be able to play, and then you lose it - counter. That means we took the risk to free you, the one-v-one… and now you don’t go.

“If you saw me play, I would have died refusing a one-v-one. You can’t tell a dribbler not to dribble because you’re scared of the counter. I get it, but it’s the truth. They can dribble.”

Henry blames the abundance of statistics available to manager for the more conservative, low-risk approaches to matches.

And he said this means when you are in the dugout “sometimes having too much info can kill you” and that “you’re not creating anymore”.

Henry hopes that matches like Paris Saint Germain’s recent Champions League semi-final clash with Bayern Munich will remind managers and fans that it is okay to dribble, and that one-on-ones are a crucial part of the game.

And he hailed stars like Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise and PSG’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for showing there are still mavericks like him in the modern game.

Meanwhile the two-time Premier League winner also admitted the relentlessness of social media criticism would have been too much for him to handle when he was a player.

He added: “People sometimes do not check what has been said… they see quickly and they scroll. Everybody talks about everybody, every single time — an opinion — and they have to go out there and play.”

And don't worry, he's still in love with the beautiful game, adding: “At the end of the day, still football - we all love it... That’s what I would even die for.”
