Man Utd manager Michael Carrick has confirmed that both Matheus Cunha and Luke Shaw remain doubts to face Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Cunha missed the Brentford fixture with a hip problem, while Shaw picked up a knock during the 2-1 win over the Bees. Asked for an update on the pair’s fitness, Carrick said:

“We’re in good shape, really. Matheus has done a little bit of work, so we’re hopeful. We’re not sure, but we’re hopeful.”

“With Luke [Shaw], we aren’t sure if he will be ready, but we are hopeful.”

The Man Utd pair’s absence would be a blow

Cunha has been playing with a lot of confidence recently, and United missed his presence up front against Brentford.

If the Brazilian international can’t prove his fitness in time, then Amad may deputise yet again. The 23-year-old was unceremoniously taken off at halftime on Monday, but he could get another chance against Liverpool.

In terms of Shaw, Carrick would need to reshuffle his back four if the left-back is not available. Either Diogo Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui would likely provide cover in that position.

While there is uncertainty over the participation of Cunha and Shaw, it is already known that Matthijs de Ligt (back) won’t be playing, while Lisandro Martinez will serve the last of his three-match suspension.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, meanwhile, has 8 injury concerns. Alisson (muscular) and Milos Kerkez (knock) are both doubts, with Mo Salah (hamstring), Hugo Ekitike (Achilles), Conor Bradley (knee), Wataru Endo (ankle), Giovanni Leoni (ACL) and Giorgi Mamardashvili all ruled out.
