Huge if true: Liverpool "in advanced talks" with £70m midfielder

Liverpool are in negotiations with Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton ahead of the summer transfer window, according to a trusted journalist.

The Reds are heading into the off-season on the back of one of their worst seasons in recent history, losing 18 times in all competitions.

FSG are seemingly set to keep faith with Arne Slot despite the club’s troubles on the pitch, with Liverpool reportedly set to spend around £250m on new signings.

£60m has already been allocated to signing Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, who will help improve Liverpool’s defensive options after a torrid season in that department.

Multiple attackers will also be signed, but midfield is a major concern after Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch inexplicably regressed this season.

Wharton would be the perfect signing to help get the Reds’ engine room back to its best.

Liverpool are in ‘advanced’ talks with Adam Wharton

According to Spanish journalist Matteo Moretto, speaking on Radio Marca, Liverpool are preparing for a busy summer to correct their course after slipping from Premier League champions to Champions League hopefuls.

Moretto reports: “Finally, Liverpool are emerging as one of the Premier League’s biggest movers and shakers in the search for defensive and offensive reinforcements.

“The Anfield club have entered the race for Marcos Senesi , who is now a free agent, and are in advanced talks for young Adam Wharton , preempting Real Madrid’s earlier interest.

“As for the attack, after deeming the signing of Olise “impossible,” the Reds are now focusing their efforts on Yan Diomandé (RB Leipzig) or Barcola (PSG) to bolster a winger position they consider vital for next season.”

Wharton is the dream homegrown signing for 2026

Liverpool are heading into a crucial window. If they fail to make progress next season, it will certainly mean the end of Slot’s tenure at Anfield, but it will have severe repercussions for FSG’s project.

If the owners have truly greenlit a £250m spend for the 2026 summer transfer window, that would take their spending in two years to £710m after the club spent £460m t0 sign the likes of Wirtz, Isak and Ekitike.

Wharton is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League despite being just 22. It would mean adding another young player, so Liverpool may need some more experience in their other signings.

Recently, in March, ex-Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison claimed that it would cost “at least £60-£70m” to sign Wharton this summer.

When asked how much the Eagles would demand, Morrison said: “Yeah, £60m, £70m – if someone wants to pay £80m, I think they’d bite your hand off. But yeah, definitely at least £60-70 million.

“If you look at how young he is and the talent he’s got, and the clubs that will be knocking on the door for him, then Palace are right to say £60-70 million.”
