
Arsenal suffered a 3-1 defeat at Lyon in the Women’s Champions League semi-final second leg on Saturday afternoon.
Renee Slegers’s side have now failed in their bid to defend the title, going out 4-3 on aggregate.
Lyon almost opened the scoring inside the second minute, when Melchie Dumornay put a cross on the plate for Ada Hegerberg, but the former Ballon d’Or winner fluffed her lines.
Lindsey Heaps then thought she had put Lyon in front in the seventh minute with a powerful header, but the goal was ruled offside.
Lyon eventually broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, with Wendie Renard sending the ball into the bottom corner from the penalty spot.
Kadidiatou Diani doubled the record champions’ advantage in the 36th minute, squeezing the ball into the net at the back post.
Lyon nearly added to their advantage when Melchie Dumornay fired a shot towards the near post, but Daphne van Domselaar was equal to the task.
Arsenal had Caitlin Foord to thank as she made a crucial tackle to deny Dumornay from scoring before the interval.
The Gunners showed more attacking intent at the start of the second half, with Alessia Russo seeing an effort deflected wide in the 49th minute.
Stina Blackstenius struck the woodwork, though she was later flagged offside. Moments later, Olivia Smith struck the base of the post as Arsenal continued to crank up the pressure.
Arsenal finally got the breakthrough in the 76th minute, with Alessia Russo getting at the end of Smilla Holmberg’s cross, bundling the ball home.
However, four minutes from time, Jule Brand sneaked in at the back post to restore Lyon’s two-goal lead, securing their place in the final.
