Redknapp makes Arsenal prediction in new Premier League title verdict

Arsenal Football Newsletter

Jamie Redknapp believes that Arsenal are favourites to win the Premier League this season, and that the pressure has “flipped” onto Manchester City.

The Gunners beat Fulham comprehensively 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening to move six points clear at the top of the table.

City, sat second, have two games in hand on the north Londoners, and they face Everton and Crystal Palace in those two fixtures, with a home clash against Europe-chasing Brentford sandwiched in between.

Pep Guardiola’s men had reeled Arsenal’s nine-point lead in last month, and they went top temporarily after their 1-0 win at Burnley, which saw them leapfrog Mikel Arteta’s side on goals scored.

City had beaten the Gunners 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium in what seemed to be a decisive title decider earlier in April, and that drew them to within just three points of Arsenal with that remaining game in hand.

Now, however, after Arsenal’s dominant display against Fulham, Redknapp believes that the north London club should go on to lift the trophy next month.

"For Man City, the Bournemouth fixture is going to be Andoni Iraola's last home game, so there's going to be a celebration there and Bournemouth will want to put on a bit of a show,” Redknapp said on Sky Sports.

"Everton away against a David Moyes side is always going to be difficult, and Brentford are going for Europe.

"If it goes to goal difference, I look at the games Arsenal have got as a big advantage. There's a game that really shouts at me and it's Burnley at home.

"If we work on the basis that both teams are perfect and win their remaining games, if Arsenal can't beat Burnley 3-0 or 4-0 and get their goal difference up, I'll be amazed. That's a big opportunity.

"This Man City team can blow teams away, but what Arsenal have done is flipped the pressure. Anything can still happen, but I think Arsenal are favourites."

Former Arsenal striker Paul Merson agreed, backing his old employers to go on and win a first title since 2004.

"If Man City win the next two games against Everton and Brentford, there's severe pressure for Arsenal to beat West Ham,” Merson said.

"That is one hard game. West Ham are fighting for their lives in the Premier League.

"Then you don't know what happens on Tuesday night, it might go to extra time. There's so much to go with it.

"If I had to pick a team [to win the title] at the moment, I'd have to pick Arsenal because of the fixtures that Man City have got.

“They have to play Everton and Bournemouth and they're difficult matches."
